The
Upper School Art program of SVCA consists of photography, drawing,
painting and sculpting. During the first quarter of the school year,
the students learn the art of photography by taking pictures using
a manual camera. During this section students are also taught how
to develop black and white film and print pictures in the on-site
darkroom. Beginning in the second quarter, the students' work concentrates
on drawing. First, they learn shading techniques, paying close attention
to shadows and tones using pencil, charcoal, ink, colored pencil
and pastels. The third quarter learn portrait sculpting, which is
sculpting the head of a subject. The fourth quarter is spent painting
working with acrylics and oils.
Art
for students in grades 2 through 6 introduces students to fine motor
skills using scissors and pencils. They also learn shading, texture,
tone and value through drawing. Seasonal projects are completed
as well as additional projects that are entered in the annual ACSI
Art Festival.
