The
SVCA Library is a state-of-the-art library containing over 10,000
titles cataloged identically to the area's public libraries. Using
the Follett System and OPAC, students are enabled to look up any
title that is contained in the library on the lab computers. This
technology allows students from K4 through 12 grade exposure
to a computerized library system when looking up books, authors,
or specific topics. The look-up also gives them the location in
the library, which is separated into an alphabetized Children's
section and the Dewey Decimal System for the Upper School section.
Of
the 10,000 titles in the library, approximately 4,500 are in the
easy reader and young reader sections and the remainder are in the
young adult and high school section. Each student receives a library
card and may check books out of the library. Many of the elementary
classes have library time weekly.
In
addition to individual book titles, the SVCA Library also has a
reference section which includes Bible commentaries, encyclopedias,
atlases, thesauruses, and current magazines and local newspapers.
The
foundational supply of titles to the SVCA Library was prompted by
a book drive in 2002, as students, families, and SVCA faculty and
staff collected and donated books to benefit the facility. In 2003,
Friends of Shenandoah Library, which is an individual group of SVCA
library supporters, purchased over $4,000 in brand new Follett books
in mostly fiction and non-fiction for the middle/high school section.
Books purchased directly from Follett have a library-lifetime guarantee.
The SVCA Library offers other services including story-time for elementary
classes and computer access for Upper School students. Computer
access includes access to Microsoft Office products for class assignments
and access to the Internet for class research. For peace of mind,
our Internet system has a filtering program on it, allowing students
to search but only see that which is appropriate in our environment.
SVCA
Library encourages those with a love for books to become a part
of Friends of Shenandoah Library by making a donation towards the
expansion of the SVCA Library. For information about giving to Friends
of Shenandoah Library, please contact the Office
of Marketing and Development.
