Debbie Cheney has served at SVCA for 31 years. She served as the 1st grade teacher her first year and has served as the high school math teacher for the last 30 years. Over the years, she has taught General Math, Pre-Algebra, Algebra I and II, Geometry, Precalculus, and Consumer Math. She is also presently serving as the Honor Society advisor. She loves to teach teenagers and knows that this is what the Lord has put in her heart to do. Debbie is married and helps her husband with his ministry as an evangelist.
Maria Clark has served as the high school Spanish teacher at SVCA for the past three years. Over the three years she has assumed the roles of Physical Education teacher, elementary and middle school Spanish teacher and Yearbook lead. Her educational background includes a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from University of Maryland University College. Prior to joining us here at SVCA Maria spent 13 years in Marketing Communications, six years as an Account Executive for a large Securities Company and five years as an Assistant Teacher. As an Account Executive she routinely provided product seminars and training to educate participants on opportunities to increase their savings and improve their retirement readiness. This work experience helped prepare her for teaching Spanish today. Maria is married and has two daughters who attend SVCA. Her husband coached the MS Girls Basketball Team this past fall. Maria enjoys working with students and helping them reach their full potential.
Carianne Combs is a 2002 alumnus of SVCA. She attended Liberty University and Louisiana Baptist University, earning her Bachelor’s Degree in Christian Communication with a focus on elementary education and child psychology in that field. Her interest in child psychology and teaching stems from her personal experience with her own children; specifically her son who has special needs. She has been teaching at SVCA for the past two years, and her three children attend the school as well.
Amy Peschken has served as the Preschool Patriots teacher for the past three years. She has served as the SVCA PTO President and the SVCA Fundraising Coordinator for the past two years. She studied at both High Point University in North Carolina and Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia. Amy started working in Early Childhood Education in 1997. She started off working as an Assistant Teacher, then quickly moved into the Lead Teacher Role. After being the Lead Teacher for several years she was promoted to the Management Team in the Front Office. Amy was in charge of scheduling and keeping track of professional development training hours for staff, payroll for a staff of over 100, daily staffing, and various other management responsibilities. When God opened the door for Amy to join the SVCA team she jumped at the opportunity to be back in the classroom! Amy truly enjoys the Preschool Patriots, they are amazing, precious (and hilarious!) children who are so eager to learn everything about anything! Amy is married and has one son who attends SVCA. Amy's husband has taken on the unofficial title of SVCA Videographer and has filmed several Kindergarten Graduations, Christmas Programs, etc. Her and her family have been attending SVBC since 2008 and are extremely blessed to be part of the close knit SVCA/SVBC family.
Since the time she was a little girl all Jodi ever wanted to do was to become a teacher. She feels blessed that she is able to live out her childhood dream! Jodi is a Shenandoah Valley Christian Academy Alumni and currently has two children attending S.V.C.A. Her passion is to not only teach but to inspire children to love learning. She is a life-long learner and hopes to encourage those she teaches to become the same. She is a graduate of Liberty University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education and a minor in Christian Counseling. She currently has a Virginia state license and special training in literacy development. Jody has taught 2nd & 3rd grade in Warren County Public Schools for four years before the Lord led her to begin teaching at S.V.C.A.
She has been happily married to her best friend for 17 years. She and her husband have a 16 year old son, a 14 year old daughter, and a 16 month old that they consider their bonus blessing from God. Jodi enjoys reading, playing games, swimming, and traveling with her family. Along with teaching she has coached middle school volleyball, basketball, and soccer for S.V.C.A. Jodi feels that getting to know the students outside of the classroom is an added bonus to her job!
Her philosophy is to provide an interesting, challenging, learning environment where students will flourish socially and academically. One of her favorite quotes about teaching is “Tell me and I’ll forget, Teach me and I’ll remember, Include me and I’ll learn!”
Derek Wheelock is the High School Bible and History teacher. He has taught for 6 years at SVCA and is going on his 7th year as the Youth Pastor at SVBC. Derek is a graduate from SVCA class of 2004 and received his Bachelor’s degree in Youth Ministry at Liberty University and was ordained in the summer of 2014. Derek is an assistant coach for the school’s varsity soccer and varsity baseball programs. He is married to Emily Wheelock (former P.E. teacher at SVCA) and has two boys, Leeland (3) and Hudson (1).
Dustin Wheelock has worked at Shenandoah Valley Christian Academy for the past nine years. He accepted Christ as his personal Savior at a young age. Dustin graduated from SVCA in 2002 before going on to receive his Bachelor’s of Science in Athletic Training from Liberty University. Upon graduating from Liberty, The Lord called Dustin to work at SVCA. In 2013, Dustin received his Master’s of Science in Sport Administration. Dustin is the Athletic Director and high school science teacher at SVCA. He is currently the varsity boys’ soccer coach and varsity girls’ soccer coach at SVCA. Many of his teams have gone on to win regional, state, and national tournaments. Dustin is married to Mandee Wheelock and has three kids, Miyhi, Tiylin, and Amiya. Dustin’s life verse is Proverbs 3:5-6.
Ellie has served at SVCA for 13 years. Over the 13 years she has taught K4, K5, middle school sciences, K3-10 grade PE and Health, and is now serving as the school secretary. She has been the volleyball coach since 2006. Ellie graduated from Shenandoah University in 2000 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Physical Education. Before coming to SVCA Ellie spent 2 years as the head Volleyball and Softball coach at Shenandoah University. She is in the Shenandoah University Hall of Fame for her contributions to the volleyball, softball, and basketball teams as a player while at SU. Ellie is married and has a daughter who attends SVCA. Her husband Bobby is the principal, teacher, and also a coach at SVCA.
This is Luanne Wheelock’s 24th year teaching at SVCA. The first 16 years were in Physical Education where she held instructional classes for k4 through upper school. During this time, our PE department participated in the Presidential Fitness Program, raised money for the American Heart Association by participating in Jump for Heart and Hoops for Heart, and competed against other schools in various cross country events. The next several years were spent teaching music to all grades including theory, elementary, middle and high school choir, school musicals and fine art competition choirs. After five years in music, Luanne went back to teach upper school PE, middle school Science and Public Speaking. She holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education and last year she became our third grade teacher and is currently teaching 2nd and 3rd grades. Luanne has been coaching cheerleading at SVCA for 24 years and has won numerous championships at the regional, state and national levels. She has been named one of the top 25 Christian Cheer Coaches many times over the past 24 years and in 2008 was awarded the National Christian Cheer Coach of the Year. Luanne is an active member of Shenandoah Valley Baptist Church where she is involved in the music program and teaches a children’s Sunday School class. She loves reading, spending time with her husband of almost 40 years, her three sons, their wives, six grandchildren and her Goldendoodle, Stella.
Andrew Temple has taught 5th and 6th grade Language Arts since January 2017. He is a 2010 graduate of Marshall University, where he received dual bachelor of arts degrees. He is also a 2015 graduate of Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary with a Master of Arts in Christian Ministry. Prior to working at SVCA, Andrew has worked as a substitute teacher for the Berkeley County Schools system in West Virginia. Andrew has been married to his wife, Cherry, since July 2010, and they have two girls — Mia and Emma.
